Trust need time to build. However from the very first business meeting, you can start to gain trust with simple action:
- Prepare well ahead of what you want to introduce about you and which value you can deliver to them (nobody want to waste time these day)
- Be professional with proper business etiquette
- Be sincere and a good listener, so that you know what people need from you rather than just "selling" your product or service
- Keep simple promise: for example you promise to send file, then send file on time or promise to make some introduction, make it right away
- Give to receive: Even in the meeting, you don't get to any potential operation, but still find way to invest into that relationship by finding way adding value to them. I agree with everything everyone said before me. I recall a phrase from a book I read (I think it was never eat lunch alone) that was "be more interested than interesting". In other words, be interested in the person you are meeting more than talking about yourself and how you are interesting. I find that this works well. Also I try to find a thread that is common between myself and the person I meet.
A common thread example - I recently met someone from Seoul South Korea. I mentioned I had a friend who came from Seoul but has since returned to Inchon. It turned out this person knew my friend. I also met a business leader from Inchon and in discussions his University's President received her PhD from Temple University where I work. You will not always find something that common but any commonality will work.
Lastly write down everything. When I go to conferences I wrote down who I met, our common threads and anything distinctive they have said. That helps me remember them and the next time I see them I bring up something personal - examples: how is your son? How was your vacation? etc.
