If you ask employees to brainstorm, everyone must feel safe to make bold, off-the-wall observations. Prevent team members from rushing to criticize or label what they hear.
This is important and especially true for Vietnamese employees, so read on.Unless you impose a deadline or inject a sense of urgency, your team's creativity can become aimless. As a result, the ideas you and your employees produce may lack the focus or practicality you need to meet your organizational goals. To stay on track, establish a schedule, and keep your goals clear and well defined. For example, declare that your team must devise innovative steps to cut their budgets by 25% or double the firm's market share within three months.

i beleive everyone has creativity already. it's just the matter how we creat the right enviroment for the right brain ( creativity side ) to be activate. Simple tips that i'v been applying for my team ( very logical team:)) are: chicken dance in the morning, team excercise around 4pm- when u feel tired n sleepy, and out-of-office meeting often. hope this help...

With Vietnamese staff, very difficult to get creativity, because of the heavy past of education.

Difficult legacy.The second thing is creativity is not innovation. Innovation is a process well explained in Harvard Business Review June 2011: How great leaders unleash innovation.

This creative thinking must become a habit.
I am not quite sure I agree with Andrew, after reading Peter Drucker about innovation. The deadline is not good for the creative mind, they will focus on the 3-month and you will miss the idea of the century. And you need to be unrealistic to get creativity.
You go like this: "we need a product that will multiply our clients by 300% and you have no budget for that just take the existing R&D and launch something... The result is the Ipod is just a hard disk, a smart software and a touch wheel. Is it creativity?Sometimes, just listening to what the client want and create it.

Tell them to be creative, acknowledge when they are and then reward them even if it something small.
You will often find yourself in companies where they maintain strict protocols which restrict creativity. This is important in areas like a production line pharmaceutical development, or surgery in a hospital. On the other hand creativity is sometimes required since protocols will not cover every detail. The Toyota model where a production employee can stop the line if they see a problem is one example where a company has instituted a breaking point from protocol to allow an impromptu correction.
Every industry has protocols and standards to ensure we meet certain productivity and quality goals. On the other hand we often miss the opportunity to identify when the protocol is not working and what the employee should do.
So tell your staff you want them to follow protocols but not feel limited by them. When you see an employee doing something "outside the box" then let others know. And if you can tie a reward to it then that encourages creativity even more.
