Vào năm lớp 8 tôi bị bệnh nên phải tạm nghỉ học 1 tháng trời và khi đi học lại thì không thể nào theo kịp bạn bè. Nhưng vô tình một hôm đến môn hình học thầy đến dạy thay giáo viên chính. Và thầy đã khai sáng tôi biết cách phân tích vấn đề. Từ sau buổi hôm đó tôi dễ dàng theo kịp môn hình học và đây là môn học mà tôi giỏi nhất. Cũng từ sau buổi đó mà tôi biết cách phân tích nhìn nhận vấn đề để có thể theo kịp các môn học khác.

Có thể nói người thầy là người tạo ra những bước ngoặc trong cuộc đời chúng ta!

Let me remind to alls what Mentor means. By definition, mentor is a wise, intellectual and trusted counselor or teacher or advisor. Mentor in Greek Mythology is Odysseus's trusted counselor, in whose guise Athena became the guardian and teacher of Telemachus. A mentor is a wise man, an intellectual man or a sage to serve as trusted counselor or teacher.

@Vu Hoang - I agree. We can learn things from people that we can't from books.

It can also come from places that are not obvious. I worked as a dishwasher when I was 13. The cook in the restaurant was an older African American Man from the southern US who grew up in poverty. We called him Daley. That was his last name.

One day I asked what his first name was and he said Alice, a women's name. He told me his parents did not read or write. When he was born they registered him and asked to name him Alex, a similar sounding name. The person simply put own what they thought they heard without a thought or caring for the people standing before them.

That stayed with me ever since -- how people can be mistreated, by accident or intentional does not matter. Daley was always happy and taught me a great deal about people and behaviors. I could never have experienced that in a book.

Công việc của mentor là truyền đạt kinh nghiệm, dẫn dắt, theo dõi tiến bộ và sữa chữa cho một người khác (mentee) có cùng chuyên môn ít kinh nghiệm hay chỉ mới bước vào nghề. Việc dẫn dắt phải có phương pháp “mentoring” thích hợp và hiệu quả, thời gian theo dõi thường rất dài và tùy theo điều kiện khác nhau của cả mentee và mentor.
Mentor có thể hiểu tương tự như một huấn luyện viên, hoàn tòan không phải như thần tượng hay tri kỹ của cá nhân.
Ở các nước phát triển, có những công ty lớn thuê mướn mentor để hướng dẫn và theo dõi nhân viên trong một thời gian dài, theo “mentoring programs” do công ty yêu cầu. Những cá nhân tự đi tìm mentor cho riêng mình là điều rất khó. Tuy nhiên có ngành, khi mới bước vào nghề cá nhân có thể đi kiếm supervisor để học hỏi, bàn luận chỉ vẽ thêm cho kinh nghiệm nhưng supervisor không theo dõi hay quan tâm nhiều như mentor.
Ở VN, thường thấy mentor là những cha mẹ hướng dẫn và theo dõi con cái làm theo nghề chuyên môn của mình. Thí dụ cha mẹ là bác sĩ dẫn dắt cho người con là bác sĩ mới ra trường và người con thường hay học hỏi và làm theo những gì được truyền đạt từ cha mẹ...Thí dụ cụ thể nhất, là trong miền Nam có cố nghệ sĩ Bảy Nam là mentor của cô Kim Cương, là người mẹ, người thầy và cũng là đồng nghiệp của cô suốt cả cuộc đời.......

My answer may seem a little bit too cliche but I dont think so. So let's do this:

My mentor, the most influential teacher who give me some purposes, some ways to deal with things, some fresh perspective to look at things, who doesnt fear going against the trends, or common wisdom... is Ho Chi Minh.
The most impressive yet usually overlooked action of his is leaving Indochina as a common labourer in a French steam ship. The common wisdom among revolutionaries at the time is study the way of Japanese, or Chinese, or Siam (Thailand) who was about the only neighbour not under colonial occupation, and the three usual destinations for revolutionaries going abroad to study, work, and learn, is those three nations. France and by extension the Viet expat communities in France is NOT consider a logical or sensible place to go. If he had gone to any of those three he could expect having many fellow revolutionaries around to help and support.
But he, at this tender and green age of 21, going against the wishes and advices of his many respected older advisors, ready for a totally new direction, got on a steamship and just went: France, USA, then British Isles, then back to France. A much wider journey and totally different from the ways of his contemporaries.
Never be afraid of thinking different than others, and be ready to back those thoughts/decisions up.
