Who is the mentor(s) of your life? Why does this person have great impacts on you?

Thông thường, mỗi người sẽ có một vài Mentor (xin tạm dịch là người thầy) mà họ cần tới trong từng giai đoạn nhất định trong đời, hoặc mỗi một khía cạnh của cuộc sống sẽ cần một “người thầy” giúp định hướng cho mình. Những người thầy có ảnh hưởng lớn đối với tôi bao gồm: cô giáo, bạn thân, Jacques Yves Cousteau và ông tôi. Xin chia sẻ vắn tắt cùng anh chị em như sau:

Tôi từng gặp một sự cố lớn, ngay khi vừa tốt nghiệp đại học và “người thầy” đã giúp đỡ tôi lúc đó chính là cô giáo hướng dẫn tôi làm luận văn tốt nghiệp. Tôi tìm đến cô để được nghe cô chia sẻ kinh nghiệm, tôi muốn nghe những lời khuyên, phân tích của cô và cô cho tôi những định hướng. Nhờ cô, tôi đã mạnh dạn quyết định và từ quyết định đó đã hình thành nên tôi của ngày nay, với con đường mà tôi chọn. Đến nay, tôi chưa bao giờ hối hận với quyết định của mình và thầy trò tôi vẫn thường xuyên liên lạc với nhau để cập nhật tình hình.

Một người mentor khác chính là bạn thân của tôi. Bất cứ khi nào có khó khăn, có khúc mắc, có niềm vui, thành công hay mất phương hướng… tôi thường tâm sự cùng bạn. Người bạn đó đã đồng hành với tôi hơn 10 năm nay và chúng tôi vẫn thường chia sẻ với nhau những chuyện riêng tư: học hành, tình cảm, công việc, cuộc sống… Ngược lại, bạn cũng hay tìm đến tôi để “trút bầu tâm sự”. Tôi hay nghĩ vui là mỗi đứa trong chúng tôi đều là một “cái hố”, nơi đứa kia có thể trút mọi thứ xuống và ngược lại.

Ngoài ra, nếu hiểu mentor theo nghĩa rộng thì có lẽ với tôi còn có một người nữa: Jacques Yves Cousteau – thuyền trưởng vĩ đại người Pháp. Từ ngày còn nhỏ, tôi đã say sưa và thả mình vào những thước phim tài liệu do ông và nhóm cộng sự thực hiện. Tôi yêu thích những chuyến hải trình của thuyền trưởng Couteau trên con tàu Calypso, đi khắp các vùng biển và đem cả thế giới sống động, kỳ ảo dưới nước đến cho mọi người. Chính vì yêu thích những thước phim của ông, ngưỡng mộ ông, tôi mạnh dạn đi theo ước mơ của mình khi tốt nghiệp trung học phổ thông để thi vào ngành mình yêu thích thay vì làm theo lời gia đình là chọn ngành học phổ biến cho nữ lúc đó.

Cuối cùng, người rất quan trọng, định hướng cho tôi từ lúc còn nhỏ chính là ông của tôi. Ông biết thiên hướng của tôi, mua sách cho tôi học và tham khảo. Ông thường xuyên động viên tôi học tập, lúc thì trực tiếp, khi bằng những lá thư tay (vì ông ở quê, đi lại khó khăn và thời xưa điện thoại không có). Ông chính là người động viên tôi học ngoại ngữ, học đại học... Ông nói: “Thời của ông, học hết Tú tài đã là đủ. Thời của con, học đại học là điều bình thường. Phải học để lấy kiến thức, không phải bằng cấp! Học ngoại ngữ để mình tiếp cận được thông tin từ nhiều nền văn minh khác. Phải thông thạo ít nhất một ngoại ngữ, giỏi ngoại ngữ thứ hai nữa thì càng tốt!...”

Tôi nghĩ, một người thầy là điểm tựa trong suốt cuộc đời mình là rất khó tìm, vì mỗi giai đoạn phát triển của bản thân mình sẽ cần một người mentor cụ thể. Nhưng cuộc sống thiếu những người thầy, thiếu những điểm tựa sẽ khiến con người ta chênh vênh và dễ bị lạc hướng.

Each person have many mentors during his life. But his (her) spouse is the person have great impact on him (her). For me, my wife is. Why? Because:
You cannot live w/ your father and mother all your life (they will become old and dead), you cannot live w/ your brothers and sisters all your life (they will get marriage and have their own family), your children also, they will get marriage one day, and have their own family. But your spouse is the one together w/ you all your life. Whatever you do, you need his (her) consultation, you do most things for him (her). And of course, he (she) have great impact on you.

Người thày lớn của tôi, chính là một CEO nơi tôi đã từng làm việc gần 10 năm. Ở thời điểm hiện tại, khi mà tôi không còn làm việc cùng anh nữa, có rất nhiều điều tôi muốn viết về anh, muốn cảm ơn anh. Nhưng để nói một cách ngắn gọn về vai trò "người thày lớn" của anh đối với cuộc đời của tôi, đó là:
1. Sự chia sẻ: tất cả những gì tôi cần để làm việc hiệu quả hơn, và để công việc có ý nghĩa hơn, người tôi tìm đến là Anh!
2. Sự khích lệ: khi có một kết quả dù rất nhỏ, chắc chắn Anh sẽ là người đầu tiên đánh giá cao.
3. Sự động viên: có những giai đoạn mà tôi cảm thấy công việc không còn là niềm vui, chính Anh đã khơi gợi cho tôi những mục tiêu thách thức hơn, để tôi tìm lại sự hứng khởi và say mê khi làm việc.
4. Sự thông cảm: tôi đã có thất bại lớn trong nghề nghiệp, Anh không giơ tay ra giúp đỡ tôi, nhưng Anh đã làm tôi hiểu rằng cuộc sống là muôn màu, con người quanh tôi không phải ai cũng là những người bạn đích thực, và muốn lớn lên, tôi phải sẵn sàng đối mặt, chấp nhận thử thách.

For so long, I kept searching for a mentor to affirm that things would be alright, to consult what I should do next. However, when I hear enough, see enough, what drives me to get going to solve the problems? The driving force to take action is what we call motivation, which comes from insid. If I don’t figure out a way to get motivated, no amount of counselling words, help, external forces can push me to get what I want in life. Therefore, my most influential mentor is myself- the inner self that shapes my beliefs and faith for life.
There are two different worlds existing - one is external and the other is internal. The external world includes the events happening around. The internal world is our perception, which is the way we see the external world. Motivation belongs to our internal world. Most of the problems I experience from the external world like stress, fear of failure, fear of what others think of me, low self esteem, …are caused by my perception alone. And the most effective ways to achieve what I want are to sharpenly change the way I see and to strengthen my self- motivation by telling myself that I have the capacity to perform better and surge ahead.
To strengthen self- motivation and to deal with bad situations, I create a source of inspiration list, posting them in my bedroom, laptop, and work space. The inspiration list includes some role models I look up to, my life purpose reminder, inspiring quotes. Here are my examples:

My optimistic view of failures comes from life stories of Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Edison.. The road to become the President of Mr Lincoln is a list of failures, such as: losing jobs, going bankcruptcy, losing his fiance, having nervous breakdown, getting rejections for nearly 20 years. He just never quit. With Thomas Edison, I choose a quote which is “Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up” because he thinks he has not failed 10000 times. Instead, he has successfully found 10000 ways that will not work. Such stories shape my belief that failure is just another word for experience and it’s a part of life that everyone should experience to live to the fullest.
When I question about my team recruitment criteria, I turn to Henry Ford’s philosophy which is to work with different experts who are a lot smarter in terms of a specific area than he is. His job is to develop intuitive sense for people and leadership skills. It is such inspiration for me to believe that I don’t need to be an expert in everything, I just need to unify those who are great in my interested business fields and make them motivated working with me
Steve Jobs’s pursuit for perfection and excellence sets an inspiration to take care of little things and to look out for how the world is moving. By that, innovation eventually visits. Such beliefs lead to my inner strength, sense of direction and add excitement and enthusiasm into pursuing what I love.
I just name a few above to address my important point: The posters, the role models, the quotes, the storeis, even what people tell me just set a preparation and encouragement stage for me to accept new opportunities, try new techniques and seek new adventures. After all, I am the one in charge of taking action and making a difference in my life. Therefore, self- motivation lies a true driving force to improve the quality of my life.

Four people primarily but there were of course many others::

First: Mr Baldwin, my seventh grade science teacher. He was near retirement when he taught me and also sponsored a photography club. He taught us current technology but also showed us technology from the past. The greatest thing was when he showed us glass negatives from when photographs would be taken using glass as the negative and then transferred to prints. We were using celluloid and his point was that everything is temporary and that new technology (celluloid) will replace something we think is state of the art (glass negatives). It was not long later that celluloid was completely replaced by digital.

Second: Mr Gallagher who I worked for when I first became a manager. He was near retirement and had an amazing career. He joined the Navy on December 7, 1941 when he was only 17 (yes the same day the Japanese bombed pearl harbor). He was very patriotic. When the war was over he went to college and within just a few years after graduating he became CFO of a local hospital. He was one of the founding members of a finance association in the early 1960's that today has 100's of members in our local region. When the US implemented its Medicare health program for the aged, he led the implementation in the Philadelphia market. Not only that but the people who worked with him on the Medicare project became leaders (i.e. CEO's) in the insurance industry. He had spirit - a lust for life in every sense of the word and nothing was going to keep his spirit down.

Third and Fourth - OK maybe they should be number one, equally. My father who worked his way out of poverty and was the first in his family to attend college. He was the one who led me to always be curious about technology - he was at the cutting edge of computer technology in his career. My mother who was an immigrant to the US and while only attaining a sixth grade (12 yr old) education she continued to learn all her life and taught us about work and politics like no one else could.
