The very first thing, no one denies good luck play a part in one's career. I read somewhere this saying: "Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity". When someone get the opportunity but no preparation is made, they fail. In my opinion, opportunities are everywhere, the thing is do you choose to take it. With a good preparation of knowledge, skills, experiences, and choosing to take it, you feel lucky. In reality, you deserve it.

Some people say that they are unlucky to explain why their target wasn't achieved. I partly agree on that; besides, there are also other reasons.

I think that God is fair and he gave all of us the same luck. Some catch it, some don't.
I dont think that you can prepare for luck or an opportunity because by definition, you never know what form will be luck and when it will knock on your door.
Here are the attributes of those who catch, I see 2 main ones:
1- they are open minded in ideas, open agenda - means they give themselves time for new people encounter.
2- they have a plan, they know what they are aiming at in a 5-year plan.

Say God gives You and Mr. U (Unlucky) 5 day chances out of 365 days x5 years. 1825 long days. I am going to explain how Luck knocks on your doopr but not on Mr. U door
You know you want to start your HR company, your colleague Mr U also dream like you.
You plan that in 5-years so you plan roughly YR1= learn HR accounting, YR2= learn management, YR3= get experience selling HR service, YR4= find capital, YR5= recruit and start.
Day 1: Tomorrow, you meet Thanh and Winnie Lam at a HR cocktail inviting Scancom explain their services. You seize the opps to ask what you need about starting a company and capital (Yr3+Yr5 done!). Mr. U at the same cocktail don't even know who they are.
Day 363: there is a seminar on private equity investment fund, you go and collect card and ask if they invest in HR start-ups (YR4 done). Mr U why should I go now, I will think about capital when I am trained.
Day 500: Your colleague at accounting payroll is absent for 1 week, your boss asks you to work over time and do the work (YR1 done). Mr. U feels he is very unlucky to have been chosen to do double work for 1 week!
Day 1001: there is a New RMIT program for the summer holidays: mini-MBA in 4 weeks for just 1,500$ launching price. No money? you sell your Honda SH 5000$ for a brand new PCX 3500$. Finished Yr3 in 1031 days instead of 1825 days (5 years right?). Mr U. no question I sell my SH and don't go on holidays!

Then you think, I have done all YR1-2-3-4-5 already, what if I spend that money from investor, it's my 1st time, what if I cannot recruit, I cannot sell. My friends say I am crazy to quit my hard earned manager's job
If my wife lose her job and I have to keep my good and regular salary at Scancom...
    Your luckiest day is on
Day 1099: You employer fire you! You are now free to start your company! Mr U. is really unlucky because Luck never knock on his door!

    I agree with Jefferson.

"I'm a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it"
    Thomas Jefferson
    3rd president of US (1743 - 1826)

Also the concept of opportunity as Rosie Vu stated above where preparation meets opportunity.

Expanding on that, sometimes the opportunity we think we have is not really the opportunity we will ultimately pursue. An example is Twitter. It originally was called Odeo and their business provided an itunes like platform for podcasts. When that business was doomed by itunes Odeo pursued a different opportunity that is now twitter. Was that luck or just hard work and determination, knowledge and learning mixed with creativity?

Same is true for Skye. The founders started by developing a peer to peer software similar to Napster. That market was riddled with lawsuits so they switched over to applying the technology to something new - voice over internet.
