NO, you don't need a formal MBA or business degree to start and succeed in business as Steve jobs stopped after 6 months college, Bill Gates stopped during MBA class, Mark Zuckerberg of facebook... The current theory is that the more degree and higher MBA you get the more money you are offered for a safe job. You typically receive "offers you can not decline" specially if you graduate in the top 10! On top of the money is so good as salaried employee, you got there at age 25+ then you took on a loan and you are married with kids, you can not risk! but the 3rd and most insiduous is the more you learn, the more your brain is educated into seeing risk and trying to avoid all the risks you see. Then your degree literally makes you see so much risk at being an entrepreneur starting your own company that you just 'forget about it" and get the big salary package of the big company. End, game over!

YES, you need a degree because most people who started with no degree because they have a passion for selling pizza for example, they tend to see their strength/passion as the only condition for success. They don't get into learning finance, marketing, sales, laws, logistics because of time shortage, no pleasure learning difficult things at age 30-40 or just too tired or lazy. They end up going bankrupt because of finance or Marketing skills lacking. My friend a 55 year old top successful trader in Vietnam to Europe, with no formal education, is now into debts over 1Mn$ because he quit his job to start a wood factory company to sell to his Europe clients but wnet bankrupt because of finance and production skills he did not have or wanted to get.
