Depend on situation and it's very much your OWN CHOICE. But remember, take full responsibility for that choice.
For example:
- Case 1: I'm a waiter, a customer complain about the food and no manager there to manage. I might make the choice to order a new disc for him/ her for free to make him/ her happy. My manager may upset later on but I can explain. Worst case is I take responsibility for that action by paying that myself (I believe the waiter with this attitude has the highest tip in that restaurant:))
-Case 2: The client want me to discount 10% on this contract while 7% is the maximum we apply for other big client. In this case I should not make them happy cause it will not only upset my boss but most importantly upset my other client. The responsibility is BIGGER than what I can take.

In my opinion, it is difficult to say customer is right or employer is right . It depends on the situation. Just say the story to you. Last year I went to National Singapore Cancer Hospital . In the wall there is the remark from the president of Hospitality, I do not remember exactly . The sentences are : our staffs are human and they try their best to serve your needs and demands. Remeber that they are the human and you should treat them well. If you abuse the words or actions to them. We will act properly to protect our staff for both benefit of you and our employeer.
If customer are wrong. our staff should be protected from the abusement and violence from the customer. Even we have to lose some impolite customers. If the staff are wrong, however customer is the king .
So we have to repharse the slogan Customer is the king if their need and demand are reasonable.
