How should I handle this case?
Today 1 of my employee request to be off (non-paid) for 3 month for some personal business (helping his Dad business). What should I do? he's a good contributor but 3 month is long and I'm not sure if after that will he come back. Please advise, thanks

Thanks for the good question. It's a situation many of us may experience on a regular basis.
Regardless of whether this person is coming back in 3 months or not, we want the transition to be positive.
I suggest asking yourself these questions:
Can you depend on him in tough times?
If he leaves and does not come back, will your team/business stop or be badly affected?
If you started your own company, would you want him on your team?
If you are building a champion team to win, is he someone you MUST have on the team?Suggestion on how to talk with him positively:
"Thank you for your contributions. We will be finding a replacement for you since your role is very important. When you are ready to return, feel free to contact me. Depending on the business needs at that time, we will see if you can join the team again."2 things could happen:
1. He wasn't serious to leave and when he realizes you are not easily distracted by excuses, he may take more responsibility and decide what he really wants to do.
2. He really wanted to leave but just didn't know how to communicate with you. He will be happy to hear this and leave in peace and you can also smile when you see him on the road in the future.Hope this helps.

You should ask yourself an obvious question:
If you can manage the business without this resource for 3 months, is there really a need for this resource in the company?"
Assuming the resource is necessary and you would hire a temporary worker do it in his absence... I would allow it if he has been employed by the company for more than 2 years, has an excellent performance and attendance record, and wanted to use the time as a "Sabbatical" to study, travel abroad, or care for a family member. I would be very reluctant to allow this time for him to work in another job though. Still, I would give him a chance to explain the work he wants to do with his father to see if it is more closely aligned with a real job or a personal family issue.
Remember: Companies who develop a reputation for being fair and sensitive to work-life balance issues usually attract the most qualified workforce.

3. He could really need to take a break to help his family and will apprecite your understanding and leaving the door open for him again in 3 months. After 3 months, if he really comes back to you, you can then reconsider what to do next.

There are thousand of reasons that employee use to tell you that they want to quit the job :D especially in Vietnam, the culture that allow people not go straight to the point but going around.
In your case, this is a signal, If you are believe that reason, you are very gullible.
You need to plan and recruit another if he have an importance role in your dept., ask he trying to stay a little longer to training the new one then let him go.
After three month, you can call him back if you want to, but I'm pretty sure that he won't :D
