Hello all,

For a small and start-up business, what are the skills for a CTO/CIO becomes a good CEO.

Being an CTO in a small-midle size IT company, good technical background is a good starting point
but of course, it is not enough.

Any non-technical issues would be potential peek this CEO wanna-be may face :)
(including soft skills, which is more important than technical knowledge)

I'd want to hear from you that what should be prepared.

    I like your question!
I think the answer is based on the difference between the responsibilities of a CTO/CIO and a CEO. Here they are :
    1) CTO: The responsibility includes:
    - Vision: ~ 20% (of total work). His vision is mostly within the "Technology side"
    - Management: ~ 30%. He just manages the staff, the operations WITHIN his department, and makes sure his department can be well-connected to other parts of the Company. He may not get involved in Finance and Sales management.
    - Commitment: 50%. He needs to do more hands-on with the Technology side to ensure the Company operation is TECHNICALLY smooth.

    2) CEO: The function includes:
    - Vision: ~45%. He must look beyond the limit.
    - Management: ~ 45%. He needs to manage all the aspects of the Company operations, incl. Finance, HR, Sales, and Technology as well.
    - Commitmemt: ~10%

    >>> So, things need to be added be become a CEO are:
    - Expand the vision
    - Improve the Finance management
    - Improve HR management
    - Improve Sales skill. In which, customer relationship is very very important.

Agree with Mr. @Hoa Am. :)
    A CEO needs to improve a lot = Strategy + Finance + HR + Business/Sale + Marketing + Technology management.
In Brief, a CTO may have done with strategy, but technically focused + HR, but almost technical personnel + Marketing?, may be not + Finance, but not in narrow scope + Business/Sale, but not much either.
So to become a CEO, I think it is necessary to improve the capabilities/skills that a CTO does the above mentioned jobs not much. :)

  • For me, critical quality of an excellent CEO are only 3:
    1) Business Vision.
It looks simple, but not simple at all. To have outstanding vision which can drive the company to win the battle, a CEO must have clear and sharp understanding of the Market, Industry and other relations.
    2) Operational management knowledge: a true knowledge of what is 7S for a company (Strategy, System, Structure, Staff, Skill, Style and Shared value)
    3) Have sharp eyes to hire the best fit people for his team :)

In earlier period, most of CEOs have Finance background as the business environment in that time required CEOs understand how to spend and make money. But in nowadays evolution of technologies, the majority of successful CEOs came from technical background, especially in hi-tech and engineering industries.

Customer relationships and increasing sales. As a CTO/CIO you already know the technical aspects of the business. Knowing how to attract (i.e. sales) and manage (service) customers is the thing that Boards will look for in hiring a CEO. Try to get involved in that side of the business and focus on the customer's needs as opposed to your technical knowledge. You are more likely to provide a break through solution but first you must readily know the customer's technical business and timing needs. I see that as the biggest differentiation.

I would assume you currently manage many people, an operating budget and a capital budget . The customer sales and service is the core to strategy and managing a company yo will be able on your "C suite to provide depth in all other areas.
