We are organizing an Executive Family Day. Any ideas to contribute?

@ Thanh Nguyen: Not sure if you do it or not yet. If big family with also relatives, try 'pot luck" each prepares a disk to share, also a song or a game for kids. Love to hear your experiences after you do it.

I have had experiences as an adult and child. Since my memory as an adult is much clearer I will start with that. I have had about four family days in the form of pool parties (swimming pool) for my group of 25 people. I usually target a start time in the late afternoon - around 3:00 pm. That seems to result in young families arriving early with their children and the single adults arriving a little later. I try to have activities for children since they need to be kept busy and the adults without children are happy to mingle. It seems to have worked out well in that the ones with young families overlap the time with the ones without children so there is engagement.

When I was young my father worked for Burroughs which is now Unisys. They would have family outings in parks where the company would pay for the food and beverages. They too had specific activities for children like games and races. The single adults would typically mingle while the children ran around and played games. some of the single adults would help with the kids' activities. So a lpicnic or barbecue in a large park where the kids can run and tire themselves out is really good.

The most difficult age group are the children who are teenagers - about 14 to 18. don't know how the culture in Vietnam is for this age group but in the US they typically don't like these events. They are too young to mingle with the single adults and feel they are too old to play with the younger children. I don't have an answer for this age group.

I would also suggest that you ask your employees for ideas. You will likely find not only that they have ideas but that they would volunteer to help organize it on their own. You can usually find one or two that will enjoy doing that.

It depends on how many people will join the Family Day. However, you can consider to book a tour for all. For example, join hotel - golf package in Montgomerie Links Vietnam, go the famous beach in Hoi An, stay at luxury hotel with a reasonable price, play golf, play team games etc. Families can enjoy themselves with P/S :only for yr references. :-) Rgds.

I think, this is a kind of family networking, they operate networking together with the same target that they would like to teach their children in a better ways. It's great to have so much valuable and vivid ideas and suggestions on how to organize the event. They are really helpful. To me perhaps one of the most important aspects of living in a family is the transfer of knowledge from generation to generation, and that’s what truly makes one family different from the other. Yet today it becomes apparent that knowledge transfer is not enough; knowledge must be acquired, and family is a greatly conducive environment for education and knowledge management in my opinion. Therefore, I propose to add this element of “Family-Enabled Knowledge Acquisition” as one of the activities of this Executive Family Day.
Following are some more concrete suggestions of mine:
1. It’s for everyone interested in joining and participating in the event, not just for married couples and their kids, who has questions to ask and experience/ stories to share (since we all have a family after all).
2. As such, each participant, or each family, should bring to the event at least one family-related story to share and one question to ask the others.
3. Scope of topics can vary from health to education, business, entertainment, travel, handling of special family situations, etc. In my view, it’s important that it includes real-life cases and first-hand experience.
4. If we can/ plan to make a series of it, it’s advisable that we think of giving it a more suitable brand making it appealing to a wider audience and interested circles.
