Get stressed from staff and lose my tempre
Dear Mr. Tran Dinh Dung,
I have been facing with staff understanding problems for 3 years
My company has 24 staff, most of them are well educated but I still have few serious problem in managing them.
First: few staff never go to work on time, even I did warn them in written as well.
Sometimes company has tough time for meeting deadline ut they call from home today, saying cannot go to work and show personal problems.
My project manager did many mistakes but never accept it. He even does not listen to any other suggestion.
Sometimes they gather into groups and make difficulties for management working or ignore company policy and not follow deadlines. It seems that in their mind the company need them to run business.
They always look for benefits of themselves and make loss for company by making wrong decision to production.
I shared my problem with many friends also and all of them the said I need to be patient.
but I need your help to get out of these issue as I am foreigner and I directly manage local staff, specially projects managers, labor and production staff are most headache and stress.
If I am friendly too much with them, they start to take advantage and if I behave strictly to them, they try to make different difficulties.
I do hope you can help me get out of these issue with your great experience.
Best Regards,
Raja Mahmood Janjua

Dear Raja Madmood Janjua,
One of the main reasons for your complaint is the difference of local culture that not only you but also whoever works in foreign environment has to face. For example, Vietnamese staffs respect relationship in both working and personal life or they are in habit of being late and missing deadline. Hence, the very first thing you should pay attention to when working in Viet Nam is learning about the local culture. Remember that culture bargain occurs not only in your personal life but in your professional one. Make sure you are prepared well for this case and ready to adjust yourself to the new environment and working style in your company. I agree that you can change the need-to-improve things. However, you need time to do that. In your case, you should spend time evaluating your staffs’ ability to give them suitable tasks. Also, you need to express your caring, sharing and encouragement to motivate your workers. In addition, connection via a local middle manager is another recommendation for you, because this person will know how to report in international way to you as well as to deliver tasks in local way to staffs.
Good luck and wish you pleasant time in Vietnam.
