What changes need to be made to people in Vietnam?

I attend a workshop recently with speaker Md Ton Nu Thi Ninh. She speak very nicely about 1 distinctive Vietnamese character that we really need to maintain : Forgiving (or "nhân văn"). Look at how Vietnamese people are willing to help US veteran to find their friend's remain or be a friendly tour guide..., you would see how by nature, Vietnamese can easily forget the pain in the past and only look for the future.That character has help this country grow fast for the last 3 decade after the war...

However in my personal view, several key mindset need to change:
- Gambling for quick win: look at thousand of people "fighting" to buy gold and stock (in the past) just for a quick profit. This doesn't add any value to the economy or society indeed
- Me, Me, Me: As long as the money is for me and my small family, it's good ehough. There's still so fewa cases that business (big or small) in the way to making profit for their own care for the environment or community around them..

Thank you for your comment, Thanh-san. I agree with you. Vietnamese people is very friendly and kind especially when they found me speak a bit of Vietnamese. It seems to me that many of the Vietnamese are trying to be nice to foreigners. However, on the other hand, sometimes I feel in between Vietnamese, they feel skeptical about each other. They seem feeling fear of being criticized or being cheated. So Vietnamese will not open their mind to the other Vietnamese much less than to Foreigners. Do you agree? Am I correct?

Hi Vu, the Vietnamese have a great quality in facing a common danger. Their FIGHTING SPIRIT for survival, in the worse period in their life they can unite and fight and defeat Chinese, French, Americans... Take the regular floods in Vietnam, there is so much donation by all (including the poor) to help fellow Vietnamese in hard times. Both men and women are terrific fighters! IT IS A QUALITY.
THE QUALITY BECOMES A DEFECT: The problem is this fighting spirit becomes a ME against the others, NO WIN-WIN POSSIBLE because if someone wins at the same time as I win, he takes away something that I should gain. the "I leave money on the table" for someone else is not acceptable.

My advice is to explain to all you meet that when you ACCEPT TO LET OTHER PEOPLE WIN TOGETHER WITH YOU, you achieve regular and sustainable winning... this is exactly the definition of SUCCESSFUL.

@Kenji: Your observation is sad, yes true:(. Originate as a feudal society, Vietnamese are high egoism and may be that make them harder to accept / open to other...
