    Never give your product for free because you will never be able to know if you have a real product that a real client is willing to pay for at a profit. Pay for one, get one free is much better; because you know at least someone is ready to pay for your effort and product.
    Now the best proven way to get client is #1 to define your target, #2 contact them personally and #3 make an attractive offer.
    #1 you need to see if you have a market, not just 1 client. A market is defined by a large group of people ready to pay the price of your product.
    #2 you need to convince people to take new product and why. You cannot rely on advertising and email because new things need to be tested by users, or at least get a very good reason tonadd to their needs.
    #3 attractive offer should be a win-win: in line with "Use it and if you are satisfied you pay with a new/early customer special price" and "in exchange, perhaps you can accept to sign a testimony of your satisfaction for our marketing and advertising". You give a guarantee to prove you are confident "satisfied or we take it back" but also you give a discount to get better/convincing marketing.
