Self discipline is the key habit. Good for anyone to have, not just for leaders.
But after you have self discipline, you should cultivate certain habits to make effective use of your time and your energy, being a leader yourself:
    1. First thing in the morning, do one thing you absolutely hate to do, yet need to do, and dont HAVE TO DO RIGHT NOW. Overcome that hurdle and your day will brighten. You know that whatever the day may throw at your heads, it's not the worst.
    2. Listen to people, Time and schedule permitting. Carefully and closely, from start to finish. Listen to what is saying and what is NOT saying. Listen to why they say what they are saying. You can talk or act later, for now LISTEN.
    3. Dont hesitate doing what need be done if there's no one doing it. Lead by Do.

But all those tough habits require self discipline.

    in my opinion, it's "LISTENING"
    - it help us understand expectations of others and sympathize
    - increase sensitivity
    - help think more deeply
    - know who matches what position and put them in right place
    - enhance learning skill
    - build relationship and TRUST
    - increase influence
    - "who listens controls the conversation" - Dale Carnegie

10 Amazing Lessons from Albert Einstein:

    1. Follow Your Curiosity

“I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.”

What piques your curiosity? I am curious as to what causes one person to succeed while another person fails; this is why I’ve spent years studying success. What are you most curious about? The pursuit of your curiosity is the secret to your success.

    2. Perseverance is Priceless

“It's not that I'm so smart; it's just that I stay with problems longer.”

Through perseverance the turtle reached the ark. Are you willing to persevere until you get to your intended destination? They say the entire value of the postage stamp consist in its ability to stick to something until it gets there. Be like the postage stamp; finish the race that you’ve started!

    3. Focus on the Present

“Any man who can drive safely while kissing a pretty girl is simply not giving the kiss the attention it deserves.”

My father always says you cannot ride two horses at the same time. I like to say, you can do anything, but not everything. Learn to be present where you are; give your all to whatever you’re currently doing.

Focused energy is power, and it’s the difference between success and failure.

    4. The Imagination is Powerful

“Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life's coming attractions. Imagination is more important than knowledge.”

Are you using your imagination daily? Einstein said the imagination is more important than knowledge! Your imagination pre-plays your future. Einstein went on to say, “The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge, but imagination.” Are you exercising your “imagination muscles” daily, don’t let something as powerful as your imagination lie dormant.

    5. Make Mistakes

“A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.”

Never be afraid of making a mistake. A mistake is not a failure. Mistakes can make you better, smarter and faster, if you utilize them properly. Discover the power of making mistakes. I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again, if you want to succeed, triple the amount of mistakes that you make.

    6. Live in the Moment

“I never think of the future - it comes soon enough.”

The only way to properly address your future is to be as present as possible “in the present.”

You cannot “presently” change yesterday or tomorrow, so it’s of supreme importance that you dedicate all of your efforts to “right now.” It’s the only time that matters, it’s the only time there is.

    7. Create Value

“Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value."

Don’t waste your time trying to be successful, spend your time creating value. If you’re valuable, then you will attract success.

Discover the talents and gifts that you possess, learn how to offer those talents and gifts in a way that most benefits others.

Labor to be valuable and success will chase you down.

    8. Don’t Expect Different Results

“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

You can’t keep doing the same thing everyday and expect different results. In other words, you can’t keep doing the same workout routine and expect to look differently. In order for your life to change, you must change, to the degree that you change your actions and your thinking is to the degree that your life will change.

    9. Knowledge Comes From Experience

“Information is not knowledge. The only source of knowledge is experience.”

Knowledge comes from experience. You can discuss a task, but discussion will only give you a philosophical understanding of it; you must experience the task first hand to “know it.” What’s the lesson? Get experience! Don’t spend your time hiding behind speculative information, go out there and do it, and you will have gained priceless knowledge.

    10. Learn the Rules and Then Play Better

“You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else.”

To put it all in simple terms, there are two things that you must do. The first thing you must do is to learn the rules of the game that you’re playing. It doesn’t sound exciting, but it’s vital. Secondly, you must commit to play the game better than anyone else. If you can do these two things, success will be yours!

    BREAKING BAD HABITS.

I think, to become a good leader, one must try to break his bad habits first. If he has many good habits and bad habits at the same time, he is still not good. But if he has few habits that are good habits only, he's a really good leader then.
So my answer is Habit of breakng bad habits.

I like what Thanh Tam said about a good leader need to lead himself first. I would say one of the most important habit that one would invest time to build up in order to be a good leader is SELF DISCIPLINE

Here is how I define Self discipline: “SELF DISCIPLINE = Be able to make yourself do what you should do when you should do it, whether you LIKE IT OR NOT.”

Every Great leader has shown tons of self discipline in the key areas of their lives. Gandhi, Churchill, Thatcher, Kennedy, Luther King Jr., and so on. I once read a blog sharing about leadership & self discipline and really love the way the writer said: Self discipline is like the horse you ride to achieve things, to move people, to communicate, to go the extra mile. Your job is to “tame” that horse to help you achieve your any goals and vision.

Self discipline is essential to leadership, you can’t pretend to be a leader, if you don’t have some discipline in your life. After all, you are a model for others, and people looks for discipline in the core foundation of their leaders.

Self discipline is a skill, and as such IT CAN BE LEARN. As I also have shared in last top question that EAT THAT FROG by Bryan Tracy is 1 of my very most favorite books, here are some self discipline activites and principle that I'm practicing everyday now:
    - Eat the biggest, ugliest frog (or the most difficult yet important task) the first thing in the morning (Though you feel like it or not and very tentative to procrastinate it )
    - Choose something that you will do every single day no matter what: for me is reading at least 30m/ day ; meditation 15m / day and read for my kids 30ms/ day
    - Saying Thanks for life for whatever life's giving. This really help me with positive thinking and energy.

Well, I like this saying " small action can turn into habits which ultimately turn into your fate". So being responsible for your own life by investing into good habits everyday!l.

I often hear people say, “People Are Natural Born Leaders,” I disagree, here’s why. First of all, people are not born as leaders, leaders are developed. It’s certainly possible that some people are born with more leadership qualities than others. However, I believe that leadership and its qualities are learned. Through experience, habit, observation, practice and a lot of work. For example, why aren’t all geniuses millionaires? It seems, most people forget to understand that by the time a leader is acknowledged as being an effective leader, it has most likely taken them years to hone their leadership qualities through repetitive practices and effective habits.
Leadership is interpersonal. Effective leadership is fundamentally about how you relate to people. So that I think Self-management is a habit that a person should invest on the way to become a leader.
People who cannot manage the expression of their own emotions are unlikely to effectively manage others. It's important to develop an awareness of your own feelings and make deliberate choices about how best to use them in any given situation. Managing your emotions keeps them from clouding your perceptions and judgments. Being able to influence how others perceive you and coming across to others in the way you intend require self-awareness and self-regulation. It's essential to have a deep understanding of your own values, motives, strengths and limitations. Though it's not always easy to be honest with yourself, you need to develop this kind of honesty if you want to be interpersonally effective.
Lastly, I think success isn't rocket science. PEOPLE FORM HABITS AND HABITS FORM FUTURES.

    • YOU need to START being a LEADER in your own life.

    • YOU need to START TODAY.

The good leader is the one must know how to EMPOWERING their followers in order to groom the next generation of leaders.

In order to do that, he/ she should develop the series of habits such as:

    * Listen to the new ideas, feedback, complaints and respect them
    * Analyze the ideas, feedback, complaints in order to make improvement
    * Assign the task to his/ her team members, and support them fully. Also, trusting that they are gonna do their best to complete it
    * Allow the followers to make mistake and give them a chance to correct it.
